The free informational web app "Let's talk FGM", available in eight languages, is designed for use during clinical consultations or training workshops on the topic of female genital cutting (FGM/C). It facilitates inclusive and personalized discussions about vulvar anatomy and its diversity (shapes, colors, hair, etc.), as well as the different types and subtypes of female genital cutting and their clinical management. The app is based on recent scientific findings and aims to deconstruct the most common misconceptions about the anatomy of the vulva and FGM/C.
The most recent estimates (UNICEF 2020) suggest that 230 million girls and women have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), and 4 million girls are at risk each year. Half of the affected population, totaling 100 million, is concentrated in three countries: Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. While the practice is prevalent in at least 28 African countries, it is also found in Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia), the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen, Oman), the Middle East (Iraq, Iran), and Latin America (Colombia, Peru). Prevalence varies significantly between regions, including within countries. Ethnic group and region of origin are determining factors.
What do vulvas look like, and what do they look like after genital cutting? What does a circumcised penis look like? The 3D sculptures support healthcare professionals in talking about genital cutting. Leah Brickhouse from the Swedish organisation Sol Sisters describes her sculptures as follows: «I create vulva, penis and clitoris sculptures for use in healthcare and in discussions about female genital cutting (FGM/C) and male circumcision.» A healthcare professional from a regional contact point of the Network against Female Genital Cutting Switzerland said: «These models help me talk to people affected by FGM/C.» The 3D models by Sol Sisters from Sweden are available in different skin tones and in rainbow colours.
